There different reasons of course why people start smoking again, but the grounds for this are pretty much the same – you have associations with smoking that you mind interprets as something enjoyable, relaxing, and in general pleasant. But shall we say it’s rather misinterpretation?
Depending on your individual abilities and on how you’re quitting smoking, the chances of staring again will vary. The physical cravings will go away easier (but not easy) and for that you may have some assistance in the way of nicotine patches, laser therapy, or some medications, but mental cravings can stay a lot loner – you can start “missing” smoking even after your body cleansed itself enough for it not to need any more nicotine.
In this case, hypnotherapy may have more chances to help you quit smoking for good as it’s reaching your unconscious mind and connecting it with your conscious reality, but it’s not the only way of having good chances for success. The method I have in mind is called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and is based on modifying your cognitions, assumptions, beliefs and behaviours with the purpose of influencing disturbed emotions.
The studies have been going for over 40 years now and this method was considered as one of the most effective treatments for conditions when anxiety and depression is the main problem – and how else better you can describe cravings that you mind is going through when you quit smoking. To explain how this method works, we can put it in simple words that this therapy affects your perception of the world (cognition) and your reaction to things happening around you and to you (behaviour) by breaking a problem down into smaller parts and instead of focusing on the causes of your distress in the past, it looks for ways to improve your state of mind now.
One of the methods available on the market and adapted for helping you to quit smoking is “EasyQuit System” by Pete Howells. This program is a book based on studies of Dr Aaron T. Beck, which he started back in 60’s. Through reading this book you’ll come to the understanding of the reasons you smoked, the reasons you wanted to smoke, and the reasons you would want to stop smoking and never start again.
